Resilience as the Master Key for Secure Cyber-Physical Energy Systems

Abstract:

This talk will give an overview of the research of the Secure Next Generation Resilient Systems (SENTRY) lab (sentry.kaust.edu.sa) at KAUST. The transformation of critical grid infrastructures into cyber-physical energy systems contributes towards modernization allowing for better planning, more flexible control, system-wide optimization, etc. However, the cyber-threat landscape on these infrastructures seems to widen with increasing sophistication associated with the use of internet-of-things (IoT) and cloud-based services despite significant benefits in terms of reliability and efficiency. The talk will present different cases of attack strategies simulated under various operating conditions to uncover their system-wide impacts in power systems, as well as illustrate the impact of such attacks and the feasibility of detection methods in simulation models in order to enhance system resilience.

Biography:
Charalambos Konstantinou is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science (CS) and Affiliate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the Computer, Electrical and Mathematical Science and Engineering Division (CEMSE) of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Thuwal, Saudi Arabia. He is the Principal Investigator of the SENTRY Lab (Secure Next Generation Resilient Systems – sentry.kaust.edu.sa) and a member of the Resilient Computing and Cybersecurity Center (RC3) at KAUST. Before joining KAUST, he was an Assistant Professor with the Center for Advanced Power Systems (CAPS) at Florida State University (FSU). His research interests are in secure, trustworthy, and resilient cyber-physical and embedded IoT systems. He is also interested in critical infrastructures security and resilience with special focus on smart grid technologies, renewable energy integration, and real-time simulation. He received a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from New York University (NYU), NY, in 2018, and a M.Eng. Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece, in 2012.

Special Session – Massive IoT: Fundamentals and Applications

Organizers and Chairs:

Gianluigi Liva, German Aerospace Center, Germany
Alexandre Graell i Amat, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden
Čedomir Stefanović, Aalborg University, Denmark

Dates: Monday-Wednesday, 20-22nd September 2021

H2020 INCOMING project organized a special session on Massive IoT communications as part of BalkanCom 2021. Massive IoT has been in the focus of research, development and standardization work in the past decade, spurred by the vision of billions of interconnected things that autonomously perform all sorts of applications. Some of the important examples are smart grid, smart cities, smart transportation, smart agriculture and personalized healthcare. This special session aims to present the recent advances in the theoretical foundations and practical applications of massive IoT systems.

BalkanCom is a major event focused on communications, networking and signal processing in the Balkan Region. It was a new conference, conceived as a small single-track event that promotes high research quality standards and brings world-class keynote speakers and researchers to one of the Balkan countries each year. After one year delay due to COVID-19 pandemic, BalkanCom 2021 is successfully organized in Novi Sad as a hybrid event. Keynote speakers lineup included Prof. Danijela Čabrić (UCLA), Prof. Roy Yates (Rutgers University) and Prof. Petar Popovski (Aalborg University).
